John Ensign
In June 2009, Nevada Senator John Ensign admitted he had an affair with Cynthia "Cindy" Hampton, the wife of his friend and administrative aide Doug Hampton, a couple years earlier. Ensigns' parents paid the Hamptons $96,000, allegedly to keep the issue quiet. Also under investigation for ethics violations surrounding his dealings with the Hamptons, Ensign resigned May 2011. In 1998, Ensign had called on President Clinton to resign, saying, "He has no credibility left." Speaking on the Senate floor in 2004 in favor of the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment, the Constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, Ensign said, "Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded.... marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation."
